This was the very first flight (fledge) of the 2nd and 3rd Great Blue Heron at Sapsucker Woods in Ithaca, NY. The cams were installed by the Cornell Labs and this is the first time EVER that bird enthusiasts could watch in the nest from the laying of the eggs until this day when these awesome birds took their first flight to the pond below. There are still two nestlings yet to fledge which should happen over the next few days. With an average wing span of 6 ft., these birds are absolutely majestic when they take flight and these two did not disappoint. They took off within seconds of each other.

I was so very lucky to start the capture right when I did. I let it run a little long after the fledging just in case there were things to be seen and learned after they landed. My favorite part though is the first 30 seconds! ~N2GBH
