Quick run through the first few keys of the exercise transcribed in the essential "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" book about Jamerson - it says Jamerson told the LA session bassist Ron Brown that the exercise was developed to help him practice his chromatic approach to playing.

  • Thanks for confirming ur using flats ,,sorry to ask so many questions ,,but , so are u using the bass buddy to record this to the computer ? Have u ever used the bass buddy as a pre amp to a power amp for live work ? I was thinking about buying a bass buddy ( i also use flatwound strings) as a pre to a power amp,,,,,,,any info is greatly appreciated,

  • The flats are the LaBella "1954 Jamerson" set. The Bass Buddy will be great as a preamp for a power amp - it even works as a head - plug a speaker cab in and you have a superb practice amp! I use it whenever you see it on my youtube vids.

  • More exercises!

  • I wish there were others but AFAIK this is the only JJ exercise anyone's written down. Hopefully JJ Junior will show us all one day some of the advice he got.

Heh - all his recordings are a lesson to me.

  • i'm having trouble following/ seeing what you're doing. sounds cool though. would it be better to do by ear anyway?

  • practice that and alternate the two fingers of your right hand . If you play with only one finger you will be stuck. Thats just a suggestion. By the way its a great exercise

  • GREAT bass tone and nice playing man. Almost sounds like a double bass.

  • Hey J-K, thanks so much for posting this. I recently purchased the "Shadows" book and your demo gives a great feel for the chromatic exercise. Thanks again.

  • Hi !! Great bass sound. Is that an American Std P Bass ? Also did you had to adjust the truss rod because of high string tension ?

  • Great Job!!

  • You are awesome!! I learn alot from you because you don't talk!! Some of the other folks need to hush up!

  • all in 1st position. great job
