Ostrich, emu and rhea belong to the same family called ratite. Meet a Canadian farmer who raises rhea and learn about these unique birds.
Transcript:
Mary- We've been doing this now for 13 years. Well the Rheas are from South America, that's their original country and in the pampas grasslands of Brazil and Argentina. They raise rheas there in large herds, like eight, nine thousands birds on a farm. They are a lot like a chicken farm would be here or a turkey farm. They are related to the emu and the ostrich. I like to think of them as cousins, they are members of the same family called ratites. Well what they love to eat is weeds. In the very first of a spring they will clear a field of dandelions, in fact they will clear them so well that dandelions will not come back. We feed them a pelleted feed. Its mostly alfalfa based but its got their proper what they need. Calcium, Phosphorous, vitamins and vitamin D and E, A and that.
