Documentary from the 80s on 4AD Records in-house design firm, 23 Envelope. Run by designer Vaughn Oliver and photographer Nigel Grierson, they were responsible for the "Look" of classic 4AD bands like Dead Can Dance, the Pixies, This Mortal Coil, etc.

This film features Vaughn and Nigel interviewed in the 4ad offices, along with interviews from Ivo Watts-Russel, Robin Guthrie, and more. Along with plenty of video footage from 1980s era 4AD bands.

  • "Contains unlicensed audio track" ?!

This must be irony. As if I could watch it "legally" somewhere else … Where?

Either get stuff up on pay-platforms like iTunes & Co. so we can stream it there officially or leave it here for free and be happy someone is still caring.

  • What happened with sound? Could you upload it in Vimeo? It's an excelent documentary.

Thanks so much for sharing. :)

  • Great times, from way back when!!

  • in these times design was much more manual handwork than a computer-job.

  • Can anyone tell me which group is featured in the photo at 20:42, or on which album sleeve it appears?

On a Grierson-related note, does anyone know if his film (an excerpt of which is show at 34:40, though the title isn't mentioned in the documentary) was ever screened on television or made available anywhere?
