  • This week Sprint, the third largest carrier in the U.S., announced that three more cities are covered by its 4G network. The additions to the official coverage list are Boston, MA; Daytona Beach, FL; and Providence, RI. With the additions, Sprint now covers over 40 million people in approximately 40 large U.S. cities.

  • WiMAX 2 -- the artist formerly known as 802.16m. That standard will boast theoretical speeds of 1Gbps for downloads, though users are rather more likely to see something in the 100Mbps range (still a huge jump over what gets an Evo 4G user excited today). When can we expect all this bandwidth? The standard is due to be finalized in November, then hardware is expected to be ratified through 2011 before getting bolted to towers in 2012 where it will, compatible with O.G. WiMAX devices.

  • Clearwire WiMAX service also lands in Houston:

WiMAX is still not in many areas around the country, but Clearwire had announced on March 30 that its 4G WiMAX service was available in the Houston area. The WiMAX service covers 1,900 square miles with 4 million people with in its service area. The Houston regional WiMAX service extends to the north of Houston all the way to Conroe and northeast to Kingwood and west to Katy. Alvin, Richmond, and Clear Lake are covered as well.

  • Intel's upcoming laptop chip, which is The "Huron River" platform will replace Calpella (the current crop of mobile chipsets), and continue Intel's fine work with Wimax and WiFi integration, in addition to new Intel Bluetooth connectivity and that crowd-favored Intel Wireless Display. The platform will be powered by the new Sandy Bridge 32nm processor, a followup to Nehalem's Core ix Series of chips. We should be seeing this in Q1 2011.

  • Is WiMax as fast as ADSL or a T1 connection to the Internet in the city?

Right now I live out in the country and there's one company soon that will giving people access to the net using WiMax to connect homes through wireless service using this technology?

Also how fast would connection be?

  • The capacity of WiMax base stations is limited just under 80 Mb/s at this time, but future generations are expected to quickly move into the triple digits.

  • can a laptop that has embedded wimax still able to get wifi?

  • So basically its a large wifi network?

  • @HybridPineapple where did u get that? if it was pontentionally bad for your health it wouldnt be sold worldwide so please dont talk smack if u cant back it up

  • @TheGhx Once you get to Canada, I recommend choosing DSL over Cable, and then pick TekSavvy (spelled exactly like that). About $32 for almost unlimited and a technical support staff that's actually capable of dealing with issues. Both Bell and Rogers, which are the big players here, absolutely stink beyond believe.

A DSL modem you buy in a (smaller) computer store for around $25 to $50, no more. So don't rent it. Or if you have one, bring it with you, it's standard technology.

  • @a1mint Thanks for the info, i will looking forward to it :)

normally i would get around 1.5Mbps to 2.0 Mbps. even though my subscription is 4Mbps.

  • @TheGhx Good luck if you do make it to Canada. You'll really like it, the people are really good here. You'll even find plenty of food to make you feel right at home ;-)

    300 ms isn't that bad.

When you do a speed test to a North American server, what speeds do you get?
