@Miss65boo I think it's unnecessary too - generally anything just for beauty is. Leave the dog alone, unless it affects his health or wellbeing.

@Miss65boo I have two danes with natural ears and one off them bit off the tips of his ears while playing with his ball. Tell me how that wasn't painful for him. I didn't cropped their ears because like you said, it's unnecessary, but accidents do happen and sometimes they're more painful to the dog than the actual surgery, so try to see it from another perspective.

The AVMA has asked AKC to "prohibit the showing of dogs with cropped or trimmed ears."

In Belgium too

It's illegal in Europe

@danemommd Oh my goodness, he is a gorgeous boy!!!!

@danemommd your DANE is GORGEOUS!

I have two Basset Hounds and their ears do get in the way sometimes, but they don't chew them off. I believe ear cropping is unnecessary and if you want a dog with upright ears there are plenty of breeds to choose from.

Excellent tutorial! Thank you so much for doing this. Every aspect of the process is so well explained. My wife and I will be doing our first taping this evening and this video has given me the confidence to go forward without apprehension.

Um lixo devia cortar as suas também imbecil !
sounds like you are taping them too close together. Remember, when the ears are supported by the bridge, the ears should form a "V" shape on the head...NOT "||" The puppy should work the ears towards the "||" look when he gets excited...NEVER causing them to "^" together. If the puppy is supporting the ears without the bridge, try that for a few days, and see what happens.

Hi there! I was wondering if this method would also work with a Doberman Pinscher who has a long, show crop.

It should be the same process. Good luck!

Steve,
What size foam pipe cover insulation do you use? I bought 1/2", 3/4", and 1" last night and ended up using the 3/4" - it might have been to big though and I'm thinking maybe I should use the 1/2" size next time?

you need to guage the size of the puppy with the diameter of your "post". The 1/2" works well (window foam) at 8 - 12 weeks. I switch to the 3/4" (backer rod) at about 12 weeks. I've never used 1" posting.

Thanks - everything seemed to go well. His ears looked MUCH better than the Vet had taped them when we were finished. It was actaully kind of alarming to see how much his ears needed cleaning! Doesn't look like they were cleaning his ears at the vet. Plus they didn't give him a day with no tape inbetween.
I really want to thankyou SO much for making this video - it has HELPED BIGTIME!
I know I'll probably sound like an idiot here but what is the backer rod kind?
er4smiths 3 years ago
Backer Rod is foam tubing sold in the cement department at Home Depot. It's used in the seams between concrete slabbing to allow for joint expansion. Its' a foam rubber tube that is 20' for about $5.00. It's 3/4 inch diameter.
