My newest toy is a GPS unit that logs data every second. Once you download the data from the GPS, you can create a KML (Google Earth) file. If you open it (you need to have Google Earth installed on your computer) it will zoom right to where the data was recorded. On the left pane of Google Earth you can click on ENABLE POINTS. That shows you the point where the the data was recorded. Figuring out the slider at the top-left lets you play and manipulate the points. It really is amazing. You can see at the end of the video I had the plane taxi up the path and onto the street. It is soooo accurate!

  • @PMDGFlyer By the way, i already found one. It's called SkyTraceGPS and it's manufactured by Magellan Technologies. It sells for $129 so it's a bit expensive. But if you really are interested in autopilot and gps stuff its a pretty good deal, especially for a beginner. Google SkyTraceGPS and take the first link :o)

  • @thomas242007 Dont think so. Except for the power wires that are probably directly connected to the battery. Depending on the weight of the gps unit, it can either be attached in place with velcro or 2-sided tape, or by gluing it onto or inside the plane. I would not attach it outside the plane as i dont like any extra stuff ruining the shiny covering :) It's up to you.

Then again, i do not know very much about this as i don't have a plane with a gps system. But google is your friend =D

  • @PMDGFlyer i may have to try this someday, sounds fairly simple do you have to solder any part of the gps into the plane?

  • @thomas242007 Nope, its about as easy as mounting a servo on your plane (just make sure it points in the right direction). Just as Softee64 said in the description, it uses gps to locate the plane and logs the position of the plane on all axes (lat/long coords, altitude) once a second.

It can then be downloaded onto your pc and opened in google earth, either by opening it straight away or converting it to KML first. I really dunno as i dont have one of these, but its pretty simple ;D
