Classic DOS Program: PKZip

PKZip, made by Phil Katz, was the defacto standard and still is for compression even today. It started out as a proprietary program that had a basic version released as shareware and a professional version that could be purchased. The shareware and encouraging of its spread helped increase its popularity but what really made it so successful in the end was when the creator (who passed away, RIP), released his algorithm as a free, open public standard. Now zip is used in everything. Windows even treats it like a folder more than a file! The algorithm is used on every software platform imaginable these days.
