Watch for the vapor trail that comes from the bottom right. The target is set at 625 yards. I am using an unmodified Howa M-1500 30-06. It's equipped with the Nikko Stirling Nighteater 3.5-10x 42 scope. The rounds I'm using are the Remington 30-06 Springfield 150gr Core-Lokt psp that you can pick up for $18 a box. The wind was 3-6mph from right to left. And because it's youtube I'm sure someone will argue that it is not 625 yard so i calculated the time it takes for the report after bullet impact(1.67 seconds) x speed of sound (1126ft/sec) x conversion factor (1yard/3ft) = 626.8 yards so there! Oh and .308's suck hahaha Logan.

  • i seen the comment about.308 suck----- hahahahaha try me. realy try me... .308 has more records of gold metals in long range shooting compititions than 30-06.. iv done the research- do the same before passing judgement.

  • @longsnipz The .308 comment was an inside joke unless your name is Logan. You could preach to me all day about .308 like I've never heard it before that's fine. As for gold medals and records... I look at history. Carlos Hathcock had 93 confirmed kills, and although the 7.62×51 was introduced in 1954, his rifle was a 30-06. I bet if you asked him and men that fought in WW I, WWII and Vietnam using guns such as the Enfield,03A3 ,M1, BAR, M1919A4, Model 70 they would say they have more records.

  • im not saying its not 625, and nice shooting, but the bullet would dramatically slow down by the time it get there so you would have to take that into accout when doing flight time x load speed

  • distance was calculated with a GPS and cross checked by the amount of time between the VISUAL bullet impact and the report of the steel target (using speed of sound at 2800ft, air temp 72f, and 10% humidity) . Bullet speed was never part of the equation. GPS actually measured 629yrds and I calculated 627yrds. @cd9ers

  • alot of ppl dont like howa but they are great rifles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! nice vid

  • @jacknifedbl I know i love it. one complaint though is trigger creep!

  • @trxrevo get rid of that scope mate! couldnt imagine it holding up to well with the recoil.

  • @2xtrmshot I have shot 220 grain loads as well!

  • @longsnipz Yeah dude you really don't know nothing about guns! Take a look at both rounds, The 30-06 is bigger therefore more of a powder charge meaning more of a range. The .308 is just a big bullet with little powder. You need to do a little more research about it or like you haven't done shoot both of them at long ranges so before you do that leave the guns to the big boys!

  • i have an 06 and love if just because its so dynamic. you have a wide range of choice from the lightest 110grain up to 200grain and you can hunt all kinds of big game in northern america and small game . but I guess you could do the same with a 308. bottom line is I love guns and they are all great.

  • @jake102293 He actually did his calculation based on the time that elapses from the instant the bullet strikes the plate to the instant that the "ping" is heard at the camera, so bullet time of flight was never considered. Unlike bullets, sound travels at a virtually constant rate through air and the distance could be calculated with a fairly high degree of accuracy that way.

  • @disturbedone5009 thank you for the info. i agree the ballistics for the heavier grain bullets sets the'06 apart from the .308. the 30-06 is a great round, thats why it is still here today- the 30-06 paved the highway for many other calibers, 25-06 the 270, .308, .243, the list is long, almost all the rounds we hunt with today was because of the introduction of it. but the comment that .308 sucks/ without knowing it was an inside joke/ got me a little stirred up. I dont dislike the 30-06 either.

  • @trxrevo If a creepy trigger was ever a problem, Howa has fixed it. The factory trigger on mine is extremely nice, no movement until it breaks. Heavy enough to not be afraid of breathing on it, soft enough to get a surprise every time.

  • @longsnipz

The reason the .308 is a popular choice for long range shooting is it matched the ballistics of the M2 ball in a shorter case meaning a shorter action. Since the case was smaller, the powder charge would fill it completely. The M2 ball had a lot of airspace in it meaning the powder would slosh around in the case leading to accuracy issues. With modern powders you can really take advantage of the .30-06s greater case capacity and out perform the .308 with heavy bullets.

  • my ballistics table says it would only be in the air for . 7 seconds at 500 yds so how does it jump to 1.67 with only another 127 yrds?

  • @trxrevo as for the inside joke- i was unaware. 30-06 has been and still is an awesome cartridge- but the .308 was used in the vietnam war. and carlos hathcock- and several others put the .308 remington 700 in the record books in the vietnam war.also with the intro. of the m14 that also uses the .308. competition range shoots is what i was saying. not sniper warfare. but the .308 still is used today and not the 30-06 in war for the reason of long range repeated accuracy.
