Video Transcript:

Hi I'm Pat Murphy. I work for Barrett Moving & Storage out of Minneapolis Minnesota. I'm van operator of the year for Household Goods Division. Welcome to my world! Here's where I spend ninety percent of my day, driving up front... and then I have my living quarters back here, with my shower, TV, satellite, refrigerator, and microwave.
"You want the truck down THAT street?"
I was going to college. In March of '76 I read the ad that said Wanted, college students for summer time job and I said "That's perfect! That's what I want to do." So thirty one years later I'm still a summer school job and waiting for my big opportunity to finish my college degree.
I'm very happy where I'm at. I've made a very good career here at Barrett Moving & Storage, and I'm very happy with my career choice.
My wife is Mary Ann Murphy and she works for Barrett Moving & Storage in Residential Sales. I met Mary Ann at work. She worked in the office. She was inside sales at the time. It depends who you listen to - she says she asked me out and I say I asked her out. I have two daughters: Denise and Kristen. Denise and Kristen combined give me seven grandchildren that keep me very busy. I see them as much as I can. I usually see them once every week. I talk to them weekly, I mean every other day we have conversation - something that my daughters and I didn't have because at the time that they were starting to drive, we didn't have cell phones, we didn't have emails. They're starting to email me pictures. That's really neat.
I drive a golf club. I can't say it's a hobby, it's a challenge. It's a challenge, golf, but my wife and I enjoy trying. She plays more golf than I do but we enjoy it. It's something we're looking forward to doing in our retirement years. Golf is about it!
I was a young man starting out. I sat in the drivers room and listened to the old timers and how they interacted with the dispatchers, and how they interacted with their customers, and I learned! It's really neat that I had that opportunity. I couldn't have asked for a better place to grow up in as the industry mentored me through my career.
I wouldn't have been operator of the year if it wasn't one of my ultimate goals. It was exciting when I finally heard it. I couldn't believe I heard it. You know, something you strive for for thirty one years, and then to finally hear that. It was very exciting.
It's the old man in charge and the young guys will have to try to keep up with me I guess now.
