Ah! Wolgang Preiss the leyendary German actor. He made a career out of acting as a German officer, much like today's Thomas Kreschmann. A great actor well remembered.

a familiar face Preiss, almost too familiar, drafter as it were into many a war film, he was truly capable of anything however, hard to say whether or not I preferred him over Curt Jergens. Both were fantastic.

Yup, there has been a traditional level of martial culture in germany though it would be easy to say that the level of discipline and deference to authority had reached an all-time high during this period.

Interesting comment. As an aside to your point:
I'm not so sure those qualities were as heavily enforced as they were natively present and simply allowed directed expression. The discipline and deference to authority was after all more a product of the traditional martial culture of prewar Germany.
