You're thinking of the Theramin (named after its inventor) which was used in several "flying saucer" movies of the 1950s, Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love," and at least one "best of" Classical favorites album. Ah, but without having the facts I'd lay good money down that the Theramin is NOT what was used in "James K Polk." What they used was the musical saw, which likewise was used in at least one "best of" Classical favorites album.
