As India and the United States show greater interest in working out the kinks in bilateral trade and investment, there seems to be a growing consensus in Washington that not only could the benefits of such engagement extend beyond the economic sector, but could also potentially have an effect on India's neighbors. India's Ambassador to the US Meera Shankar says that India's growth and development will provide opportunities to all its neighbors, including Pakistan, to participate in a future where stability, growing connections, and 'movement of people, trade and goods' define the region (INT). But could US-India economic ties in fact spur economic collaboration amongst south asian countries? Richard Fontaine from the CNAS says projects like the proposed pipeline to India, and trans-shipment of goods between India and Afghanistan through Pakistan could further economic integration between the countries of south asia(INT). Bruce Riedel of the Brookings Institution says that the US and India must also strengthen collaboration on regional strategic issues including counterterrorism by sharing intelligence, such as any information pertinent to India's security interest that may have been gathered from the Abbottabad operation (INT). Riedel says that bilateral trade could also greatly benefit the US-Pakistan relationship: Trade, not aid, he says, could be the answer to Pakistan's troubles.
