James Kalm wends his way to the North side of Williamsburg and checks out two of the latest mechanical fantasies by Jonathan Schipper. The Slow Inevitable Death of American Muscle poses two muscle cars in a slow-motion death collision. Running twenty-fours a day for the six weeks of the exhibition, these cars, relentlessly smash into each other under 28,000 lbs. of hydraulic pressure. In Measured Angst a beer bottle is broken and reassembled in a mechanical intervention against entropy, parodying the limitations of scientific problem solving. Includes an interview with Jonathan Schipper, and a six week time lapse documentation of the collision.

  • Cartoon physics. So convenient, in real accidents I never know who was moving in what direction and the color of the light. Pontiac will rise from the ashes.

  • Unfortunately, Pontiac's history, but Wylie Coyote will always come back to use the giant slingshot.

  • I cant believe someone would do this to cars that are such gems. smash honda civics, then you would only be doing a favor.

  • Would you prefer "sanctimonious soccer moms" instead?

You're missing the point - people who know nothing about the goings-on in Detroit and the industry's problems yet try to make a point about "global warming," foreign oil, and even SUVs really should get a clue. But let me digress: musclecars were not the problem, and those aren't real musclecars anyway.

  • Sanctimonious hipsters? Who was trying to be poignant? I don' t think this artist was trying to be sentimental about the American muscle car or anything. You watched a video about art in Brooklyn and saw hipsters before you even looked at the video.

  • As usual, sanctimonious hipsters in NYC pretend there's something poignant in being misinformed. Maybe they should go back to listening to Pavement CDs (remember those?) and trying to be ironic.

  • That was a great exhibition. I've been enjoying your video clips. Keep them coming..

  • thank you mr kalm........great as always

  • I am glad that you documented the entire crash scene. It is interesting to see what parts of the cars bend or collapse first. Thanks for the footage.

  • This video is only a day old and already 203 views... reach your own conclusion.

  • Nice documentation. I was hoping you would show the cars as they changed.

The concept seems a little predictable but it's still quite the show. Very cool.
