Toronto Crime Stoppers Community Youth Program
BMX Bike Ramps Painted With Legal Graffiti Art by Ledbury Middle School Students
The media is invited to attend Ledbury Middle School, 95 Falkirk St from 12:30pm-3:30pm Wednesday February 18, 2009 for youth graffiti artists from the school painting positive, community building legal graffiti art on BMX Ramps that will be used in the upcoming TorontoBMX Jam '09 at the Direct Energy Centre March 13-15, 2009.
This opportunity working with Crime Stoppers and kids to build trust through legal graffiti art projects resulted from a mention of the legal graffiti art initiative at a recent Toronto Crime Stoppers school presentation that encouraged youth at the school to help prevent and solve crime together with the police and community partners.
The art work of the students will be entered online to the Toronto Crime Stoppers T-Shirt Re-Design Contest co-operated by Toronto Crime Stoppers and Communities Advancing Valued Environments at http://CommunityCAVE.com .
The school principal has received a number of complaints of minor vandalism graffiti in the area, and feels that an initiative that provides his students with a positive outlet for their graffiti art talents will reduce incidents of vandalism graffiti, and celebrate the positive talents of his students.
The Toronto Crime Stoppers school presentation encourages to report information of concern to an adult they trust, to the school police officers they come to know and trust through the School Resource Officer program and Empowered Student Partnership program http://esponline.ca , or anonymously through Crime Stoppers in one of three ways: Talk: 416-222-TIPS, Type: http://222tips.com or Text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637).
The presentation is done on a live Internet feed on the social networking site http://Facebook.com (Profile of Officer Scott Mills http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?i... / Toronto Crime Stoppers Facebook PAGE http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?i... and the video sharing site http://YouTube.com/1800222tips . Students are educated on how to safely use social networking sites and video sharing sites for positive community building initiatives.
Interested schools or community programs can book a similar presentation to their group of youth, parents or interested adults by contacting the Crime Stoppers office at 416-808-7260.
Prizes for the youth participating today have been donated by Sterling Downey, the founder of the Montreal based 'Under Pressure' legal graffiti art event. Funding for the paint, plywood and supplies has been received from the general public as a result of media appeal in the Toronto Sun for funds. Thank you to the public donations totalling $1500.00 that came in to help fund projects such as this.
