My Attempt at Patterns In The Rain, written by Foster Paterson and sung by John Martyn on the album The Apprentice. I'm not really a big fan of John's later songs but that never stopped me from buying his albums and Sapphire and The Apprentice were well worth the wait. I hope you like this rendition. Check out the video of John singing this to Foster's piano solo accompaniment.
This is in standard tuning, with no capo.
Chords are:
Intro : Em(VII) D(V) C(III) D Bm Esus4 E.
Verse: Bm(VII) Em(VII) Bm(VII) Em(VII) Em(VII) D C D Bm Esus2 E
followed by:
1st Bridge : C C+ Am Am7 D
Bm Em Am D
Am AmMaj7 Am7 D
Bm Em
C D
2nd Bridge:
Am D Em Am
D Em Am
C C+
- b - a - g - Dsus2?

chord marked with roman numerals signify fret position. otherwise all open chords.

Worked out by ear - corrections most welcome. This is definitely one of my favourite songs by John.

  • The rain is pouring down here in Scotland while i listen to you play and sing. Another beautiful Scottish sumers day. What a brilliant cover. Thank you very much for sharing.

  • @banberry2112 Cheers, Ian. This is definitely one of my favourites, particularly of John's later recordings. Your video tribute of this was wonderful.

  • Great camera angle. I hate bar chords so I really admire how you play this. Brilliant my friend.

  • @cjwaywell Cheers, Chris - I hate bar chords too and now a lot of guitars have rather wide necks so I'm being forced to kick the thumb over habit.

    All the best

    John

  • *Great stuff* John. This song has a special nostalgia for me. All that album..somewhat strange ambience at times I thought. I loved that version live u mentioned (Island celebration in 80s)..always recall seeing him as that show ended..convinced he was smoking (on TV) a reefer standing next to 'Trisha' I believe-of talk show fame- and a couple of other women too...not like JM that, is it? :-)

Thanks for this and the playing info'...must have a bash when I can get some time!!-Ian

  • @ianmcgeachy Cheers, Ian, it's definitely one of my favourites - mellow, bittersweet - harkens back to his earlier stuff, at least to me, it does.

  • @LiteGauge : with pleasure! ;-)

  • @johnmartyntribute Thanks very much. - very interesting, John playing on a classical guitar!

  • @johnmartyntribute Yes, it's me playing - I meant that I wasn't sure whether John was playing guitar on this track as the style is quite unusal for him.

  • @LiteGauge: If you are interested here are the details for "the apprentice! Seems, that he play the guitar in this track himself:

john martyn: vocals, guitar / foster patterson:keyboards / aran ahmun:drums / colin tully: sax on "the river; upo" / andy sheppard: sax on "deny this ...; send me ...; look at that..." / danny cummings: percussion, backvocals / danusia: backvocals / taj wyszkowski: rhythm guitar on "live on love; the apprentice"
