Mia was my beloved Blue Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog). I said goodbye to her on January 28, 2011 after 13 years. It was one of the hardest most trying times I've ever had in my life. I wanted to do something honor her memory the way she honored me with her friendship for so many years.
One of Mia's favorite things to play with was empty plastic bottles and she'd chew sticks down to nothing. Mia was a country girl and loved to be outside. If you just said "squirrel" she start looking up into the trees for one. In her younger days she almost ran a few of them down. For an unknown reason Mia tore the ACL in each of her knees about a year apart. Thankfully we lived only about 30 miles from College Station, Texas where the finest Vets in the world are trained, Texas A&M. Both knees were repaired and she went back to being a little ball of fire. Mia loved to swim any chance she got. Living in Texas I even got to take her to the beach a few times and she had the biggest time chasing and biting the waves. As much love she had for swimming, she had an equal disdain for getting a bath. You could just say the word bath and she'd go the other way. The whole time she was getting a bath she looked as if she was being abused and wondering what she had done wrong.
Many people say, "It's just a dog" but I assure you she was far more than that. She was my very best friend and was right beside me through many triumphs and trials with an ever present look of love and contentment. I will miss by good friend forever and this is just a tribute to her for the many years of love and happiness she brought me. I love you Mia ... Goodbye My Friend.

Song: "Goodbye My Friend"
Written and Performed by Karla Bonoff

I had always intended to use this song to honor my beloved dog and became more determined to do so after reading an interview of Karla Bonoff and the story behind the song. It couldn't be more fitting.

Oh we never know where life will take us

I know it's just a ride on the wheel

And we never know when death will shake us

And we wonder how it will feel

Chorus:

So goodbye my friend

I know I'll never see you again

But the time together through all the years

Will take away these tears

Its okay now goodbye my friend

I've seen a lot things that make me crazy

And I guess I held on to you

We could've run away and left well maybe

But it wasn't time and we both knew

Chorus:

Life's so fragile and love's so pure

We can't hold on but we try

We watch how quickly it disappears

And we never know why

But I'm okay now

Goodbye my friend

You can go now

Goodbye my friend
