    ITS HIDEOUS!

  • It looks even worse when you are really that close to it! Still an interesting sight though. Thanks for looking! :)

  • Oh, no problem. As I shipbuilding student I'm always eager to learn more about ships, especially the ones built in my home country.

I'm quite sure that they'll tell us about this on next year's ship structures course, as they give quite a lot of real-life examples from problems faced in designing ships. If not, then perhaps I should ask about it...

  • No don't feel stupid, I'm sorry if I made you feel that way. You've made a valid point and you're quite right that externally the Freedom class doesn't appear to lessen in bulk towards the top. The only reason I pressed the issue is that they had a particular problem with the join between steel and aluminium when they built the ships - the two metals when joined together react quite strongly and create serious corrosion so they had to use a special bonding method. It's pretty fascinating stuff!

  • Well, to be honest, I've only heard such comments about Oasis of the Seas (from my teacher when someone asked about using aluminium in the superstructure) and just assumed that it applied to the older ships as well as they were built in the same yard for the same customer just couple of years ago. Thanks for pointing that out.

Also, my claim about breadth/width is based on photographs as I have never seen actual section drawings. Thanks for pointing that out as well.

    I feel stupid :)
