At the 2005 edition of the Sonorities Festival of Contemporary Music, hosted by Queen's University Belfast, in a talk titled "Low Brass/High Tech: some ideas about alternate controllers", Nic Collins demonstrated rev. 3.0 of his "trombone-propelled electronics": a Macintosh-based digital signal processing system controlled from, and playing back through, a trombone.
Based on systems begun in the mid-1980s, this is an exceptionally "instrumental" computer music device, especially well-suited to interactive improvisation with performers of more traditional acoustic instruments.
Nic Collin's appearance was made possible with the kind assistance of the Dean's Office of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
