The next day I prepared for my tour of Mombasa. I was picked up by my tour guide and taken to a Hindu Temple. Mombasa has an Indian ethnic minority. Many Indians immigrated to Mombasa in the late 1800s to help build the railroad there. Many stayed and there is still a large Indian community there today. We then headed to Fort Jesus, a Fort that was built by the portuguese and later taken over by the arabs. It is one of the oldest buildings in Mombasa, built in the 1500s. We then went to Mombasa Old Town. Mombasa was founded by the arabs in the 11th century and has a strong muslim influence. About 70% of the population in Mombasa is Muslim. Mombasa Old Town is one of the oldest areas of Mombasa. Women walk in the streets wearing the Burkha, the black garment that covers the entire body. Locals in Old Town are very religous and the sites and sounds felt like I was in the Middle East, it was very cool. We went to the market and saw spices from around the world, bags and bags of saffron and other spices ready to be scooped out and weighed. A diverse population of people of African, Arab and Indian descent (with a spattering of European expats and tourists), made my experience in Mombasa an interesting one to say the least.
