Wow. Anybody who actually reads what the OT says can see clearly that Hitchens was NOT mischaracterizing. I've lost count of how many times God told Joshua to slaughter ever citizen of these other lands, with the exception of the virgin women and children (and even those as well in some cases). I don't recall a single instance on that campaign when the plan was to go in and strategically take out the government in order to save its people from it.
