Joe Jongewaard of the Iowa Department of Economic Development stopped by the Statehouse on Thursday, January 21st to talk with legislators about the IJOBS proposal that would increase local job opportunities around the state. This proposed legislation would expand rail service in individual communities to increase their marketability to wind energy manufacturers and attract jobs to the area. Rail ports provide the companies with the ability to increase production and reduce costs by expanding their ability to transport their products.
There are seven communities throughout Iowa that have rail ports on their wish list for the future, but are simply lacking the funding with which to move the projects forward. Construction of these rail ports would move these communities to the top of the potential site lists for companies.
There are 2,300 potential permanent green manufacturing jobs to be gained in Burlington, Butler County, Clinton, Davenport, Manly, and Sioux City that would help these communities thrive and give them better access to the rare opportunities found in the wind energy manufacturing.
