  • @Mariposa1Kamikaze Boyer had no choice but to pay... France threatened to enslave and kill as many haitians as possible at the time.

It's like saying Japan shouldn't have surrendered during WWII... They had no choice.

  • @Rockstafeller Haitian history is everywhere, especially today with the internet. Those who are interested in Haiti can find the history. You will not here the true cause of our suffering as a people on tv because the people who control these tv networks will never tell the truth about anything. If after Jan. 12, 2010 Haitians don' t "union fait la force", I don't know when they will ever unite for a greater good.

  • @sankofa669 Exactly, do people even know about this? I have never heard ppl on TV saying even ONCE that Haiti's economic problems have their roots in revolution

  • @Mariposa1Kamikaze Haiti paying reparation to France was like a rape victim paying the rapist to leave her alone. A mother paying the killer of her son for the kill. A victim of robbery paying the robber for what they stole. How did Jean Pierre Boyer ever agreed to such bullshit? If Dessaline and Christophe were around in 1825 that would not have happened.

  • "My decision to destroy the authority of the blacks in Saint Dominque (Haiti) is not so much based on considerations of commerce and money, as on the need to block forever the march of the blacks in the world."

    --Napoleon Bonaparte

  • So this is the reason why many Haitians are still bitter towards France. They don´t hate individuals for being French, but they would like to have an official excuse instead of charity.

In fact, it should have been France paying reparations to Haiti (and not vice-versa) back in the 1900s, for having uprooted and enslaved its population from Africa. It was a crime against humanity. Haiti´s slaves fighting for their freedom were doing nothing but defending their basic rights.

  • Unfortunately Haitian president Boyer agreed to pay, which was one of the biggest mistakes ever made in Haitian history. The young republic was already isolated and shunned by all its neighbours for being the first nation founded by former slaves. Additionally, the payment of this "independance debt", had a fatal impact on Haiti´s economy during the 19th century.

Adding some corrupt government to that, you have the reason why Haiti is still among the poorest countries today.
