Some footage of the closed Woodsreef asbestos mine near Barraba, NSW, Australia. It was a roaring industry in the 1970's & 80's, employing half the town's workforce. It is sadly quiet today, closed down and abandoned. Footage taken December 2005 (and it was a bloody hot day!) Features: The main pit, half filled with strange blue water; closeup of the mill, gatehouse and other buildings.

  • I say, everyone please take a chill pill. If you's keep it up, I'll be forced to ask nicely again.

  • so your dad worked in this place for 10 years?and he didnt get sick??and people leaving comments and saying you gone get sick for taking this clip lol...when was your dad working in this place and how long ago??its amazing to see that asbestos dosent kill everyone...as someone told me we breath alittle bit in every day in our normal lives not to mention led...led is every where too..by the way i live in australia now in asbestos made house lolwell the fencing is lol

  • Its a scientific FACT that it can take anywhere from 15 to 25 YEARS after exposure for asbestos disease to start showing symptoms.

It is certainly not a laughing matter, thousand upon thousands of people have does due to asbestos exposure.

  • Hey jus chill guy.... ^^

  • persionguy, nah my dad isn't sick thank goodness. He worked there 1974-84. I think yer right, it's like smoking... some people can smoke like a chimney for 50 years and not have a worry, and others can die of lung cancer with ever putting a cigarette in their mouth. Luck of the draw.

  • Thx for your comments ;)

Interestingly, my dad, who worked 10 years at the place, led a one-man crusade over the dangers of asbestos. (He's still alive today thankfully :)

  • Been there, shame the Govt didnt let that Canadian company come in & clear the remiender of the shit outta there would've been great for the town of Barraba jobs wise & health wise, my bro lived out there near ironbark cottage and was told the air was safe yet men in space suits used to always show up typical Govt...

  • Woodsreef was the first mine in Australia to use Cat 777 trucks, they had 14 of them and 5 992B wheel loaders and later a 992C. I went there with my dad as he sold them there tyres for the mining fleet. 777 was a huge truck for a 9 year old to see up close.

  • i just drove around the mine... am i going to die :/

  • @jq747 I worked there with your father, what's he doing these days? Also went back and had a look around 2 years back. Barraba is so different now how's your sister going? seems like a lifetime since I left there and you were probably about 8 or 10. Assuming I've got you innitials right and your father would be RQ

  • Lets get some facts right!

For starters, 1 fibre does not kill. The Australian national exposure limit for asbestiform material is 0.1 fibre per cm3 of air over a 8-hour working shift. Air sampling around the Woodreef mine continually satisfies this criteria.

Air sampling around a busy intersection has been found to be in excess of 1 fibre/cm3.

Chrysotile (white asbestos) has not been directly related to mesothelioma.

Get your facts right lathaldosey before you start rambling crap!

  • Well you wont get sick like any of them other bastards , and he would of known wouldent he , He isnt a five year old child !! And if it was closed years ago , No asbestos will have been disturbed by him anyway !!

    jawawjawa350 Is right aswell
