The most up-to-date data comes from CelesTrak which is funded by the Center for Space Standards and Innovation, located in Colorado Springs. As of this writing, there are over 13,000 satellites in orbit (they CLAIM.. non black ops) and over 20,500 satellites have decayed since 1957. Looking carefully at the data it appears that there are just under 3,500 satellites that are both functioning and in their correct orbit compared to nearly 10,000 that are classed as debris but haven't yet decayed. So 75% of the satellites orbiting the Earth are junk!

  • AT&T needs to have their satellite closer to the earth so they can get signal.

  • The size of the satellite symbols makes it look more densely populated than it actually is

  • can't be true, can it?

  • @MurdocLC just under 3500 are still functioning properly. About 75% of those satellites orbiting are classified as junk that hasn't decayed.

  • @Koric5733 your wrong. i looked it up and just under 3500 satellites around the earth are still in normal orbit and functioning. Everything else is classified as debris that hasn't decayed yet.

  • fake, there are 994 satellites in orbit

  • Isn't it 3000 not 13000 wtf?

  • Who pays for all these satellites and who profits? Can I, as a businessman buy a satellite and have it sent in orbit so I can have my own phone line or transmission? An expense indeed! Is it real estate? What if I were a psychopath businessman and launched a satellite for surveillance purposes? A Psychopathic Corporation? Is there such a thing? I think I want one so I can watch the bad guys.

  • @Draxis32 Ok, now I see your point about the multitude of satellites - but that last comment didn't make any sense so I was confused.

  • @tillerman00 That we have about 500 Operating sattelites and over 20.000 trash/non-working sattelites in space.

People in Astrophisics have a hard time spotting stars during the night because of the many sattelites that cross their field of view.

Its like one every 3~5 minutes man...90% of it its just trash floating up our heads.

  • @Draxis32 What in God's Holy Name are you talking about?

  • There are not so many working satellites, but Space Trash?

Man if the humans down here whereever we go we land trash, in space its like 10 times that.

Actually its even worse if you count the number of people that went in orbit with the amount of trash we have out there its a ridiculous high number.
