Contrary to what most people think, the majority of hunting accidents are not gunshot wounds. Most people that are hurt during hunting season are injured falling from tree stands. So today, we're getting some advice from a friend that will let us enjoy hunting from a stand, and do it safely.
First, check it out. If you use a permanent stand, replace any worn or weak lumber before the season. On a portable stand, inspect for loose nuts and bolts each time it's used.
Next, be sure to tell a dependable person where you're hunting and when you plan to return. Map your whereabouts and leave a note at camp, at home or in your car.
As a precaution, remove logs, upturned and cutoff saplings, rocks, and other objects from the ground below your tree stand. Always use a climbing belt. If you're using climbing devices, choose only healthy living trees. Once you're in the stand, always keep your safety harness fastened. A safety belt will do in a pinch,
But the harness is better, and never use a rope in place of a safety belt.
Never carry equipment with you when you climb. Use a haul line to raise and lower your gear, first making sure guns are unloaded and broadhead arrows are covered.
Wear boots with non-skid soles and don=t let yourself fall asleep.
Finally, carry a whistle, first aid kit, flashlight and cellular phone, in case you do run into trouble. Despite all your efforts, accidents can still happen and equipment can still fail.
It only takes a little extra time and planning to make sure your tree stand hunting is a safe and enjoyable experience.

  • Great video. Was this done with professional camera crews? What cameras, lights and sound equipment were used?

  • This was shot using a professional crew out of St. Louis. Originally shot using a high-end digital beta camera, they now shoot using a sony 900 HD camera. A portable HMI and reflector along with a wireless and boom mic are the norm on these shoots. It was edited on an AVID system.

  • yea guys use a good harness and be extremely careful wen climbing. i fell of the THIRD STEP of my tree stand and now i have a gash on my arm from a jagged branch.

  • Check out the new rescue one controlled descent system!! its a new type of full body harness that allows you to quickly lower yourself to the ground once you fall. its really cool

  • Good tips, but you have to get the word out about using these rear attachment death harnesses, there is a much safer way !

  • my fat uncle fell asleep on a treestand and woke up on the ground about 30 feet below the treestand

  • hex hex hex on the tree stand for the fall and I mean a real big fall LOL

  • Check out the New Rescue One CDS (controlled Descent System) If you fall you can safely lower yourself to the ground. No more hanging there and dying. 2 in Ohio in one week,, one had 2 cell phones with him. You die that quick.

  • Please tell us what video cameras, microphones, lighting and editing software were used to create this video! It is very good quality: nice saturated colors, good audio and nice camera angles. I'd like to produce some vids for South Carolina DNR.

  • ya i fell out of a tree stand i no better now
