This is a review of the SPOT PLB. You can find out more about the SPOT on findmespot.com.

Gear - Nothing particularly tactical about this, but could be used in situations to communicate location where normally that would be impossible.

Gadget - Lots of fun things you can do with this. I love the web page you can give to friends/family so they can see exactly where you are. The "OK" feature is an excellent touch to let loved ones know that although you may be out of communication range you can still say "hello and I'm doing fine". Lots of fun gadget potential here.

Getaway - This is a device I'd definitely want with me, but if the emergency has already been reported I'm not sure it would help further. It would certainly help communicate exact location in situations where cell phones were no longer useful. The obvious use is emergency situations that need immediate attention in areas where you cannot communicate with anyone else to call for help.

  • I got it, paid to subscribe, and now can't get it to show me where it's at. I have it outside under the sky and set the OK button and they're both flashing

I have 2 email addresses set up on the site and it still wont send the emails to show the links to see the map

    what am I missing here?

  • How long have you waited? It sometimes isn't very quick to dispatch ok messages, but within several minutes you should get something. I would suggest calling support. Also the first time you use it sometimes it takes a long time to get the GPS signal and it can't send out an ok until it does that. All else fails call support!

  • I Have a Spot. I fly an ultralight airplane and land in the small lakes in the mountains. I have tested the I'm ok feature in very remote areas and it works great. This is a great little device that can provide you with an option in case of trouble. The only beef I have with it is that it turns on accidentally, very easily while being bumped around in my flight suit. Even though the batteries last a long time in that state. It's a little disconcerting draining power away for no reason.

  • I'm with you on the buttons. They need to be improved. They work well for me because we mainly leave the spot on our dash, but I could see how it might turn itself on. Fortunately enough the 911 button does have a bit extra protection against that so hopefully that never accidentally gets pressed!

  • Hey great review! This is a device that anyone who spends extended periods of time outdoors needs to have!!

  • Agreed, thanks! =)
