what engine were the sprintcars running back then?

To the visiting riders, especially the American's who usually raced on 1/8 mile tracks like Costa Mesa in California, Claremont must have seemed like a long track rather than a regular sized motorcycle speedway track which are usually no longer than 450m compared to Claremont's 550m length
