  • As for trivia....wonder what brand of cigarettes he smoked?

  • @meg3325 I was wondering whether to mention QI when I posted but that just seems like showing off! But you do have to remember that the vast majority of our shows are not like that. I do take your point, seriously, but after The West Wing you sometimes need to be reminded that US television writers can be world class too. Thanks for the reply.

  • @ComposerInUK - there are a few smart, witty Americans today, but they are far and few between. America in the 50's & 60's was a totally different country. Speaking of the UK, I enjoy the BBC show QI. Now there is a group of witty Brits who know more about the U.S. then most Americans. Stephen Fry is a great host. Even in the 21st century the Brits bring civility to television.

  • @meg3325 Americans still are witty, smart and educated I think. It's those Americans that get put on TV these days who are the problem. It's just the same in the UK. Those who are deemed 'clever' or 'erudite' are frowned upon now in the way they were celebrated then. These shows are a great example of how classy Americans were then and could still be today if only we were allowed to see them and not the trash who have taken their place.

  • @meg3325 Too much TV and not enough radio and reading.

  • @NeverDoubt1 That is totally true.He got to pioneer in many things and is really remembered even after 106 years. But it's sad how the bussines mistreated such a talent!

  • @ThePythonfan Still he was more fortunate than most; he pretty much got to pioneer the Film Noir genre.
