オーストンオオアカゲラ 奄美大島

奄美大島の自然観察の森（龍郷町）で見たオーストンオオアカゲラ（メス）。

キツツキの仲間で、照葉樹林内に生息し、樹の幹に穴を空けて巣を作る。繁殖期にはくちばしで連続的に樹の幹をつついて音を出すドラミングという行動がよく見られる（映像あ­り）。
奄美大島とカケロマ島でしか生息が確認されていない（2009年5月13日時点）。絶滅危惧IＢ類、種の保存法に基づく国内希少野生動植物種。国の天然記念物。
