When first deployed in 1976 was not a popular aircraft among USAF pilots, not being sleek and fast, and certainly not "sexy". It nonetheless stood ready to repel the dreaded soviet armored invasion of europe for which it was designed. By the time the 1990's rolled around it was out of favor among Air force brass, and was slated for retirement. Then came the 1991 gulf war, where the A-10 proceeded to chew Saddam Husseins' much vaunted tank forces into scrap metal. 900 tanks, 2,000 assorted vehicles and 1,200 artillery pieces met their end to A-10's and the Air Force soon after thought better of their plan to use F-16's for ground attack instead. The A-10 is now scheduled to remain in service until at least 2028 and is the bane of alQuaeda and the Taliban. In this video the A-10 displays it's attributes. An external inspection, GAU-8 30mm cannon, external stores including Maverick missiles (TV an radar guided) rocket pod's sidewinders, Laser designator pod. Also a view of the cockpit.
