an opening statement for my opposition to the voluntary human extinction movement. This is NOT in depth, but is rather just my introductory arguments in favor of the human species in the hope of sparking some debate. Hat tip to SkallagrimNilsson for sparking both this specific video and my return to Youtube. He is a deep thinker and speaks english as a SECOND language better than the majority of my countrymen speak it as their native language.

On this particular subject, He and I agree on a lot of the problems and at least at present seriously disagree on the solution. Since he is the first person I've encountered in the Voluntary Human Extinction movement who isn't a pompous ass and is well educated on the subject, He may sway my opinion more than most. He'll never convince me that their projected outcome is a good idea, but I've not learned enough of their proposed methods to make a well informed judgment. And as I note in the video, my bias is VERY strong against this philosophy.

However, I made the video public and generic because this is something I've not really explored very deeply (from the opposition side. I've been studying overpopulation and it's implications, likelihood, and possible solutions since I was a young child. The first full length novel I ever read was "The Deep Range" by Arthur C. Clarke, which centers on the problem and a couple of possible solutions.

  • I have been having a funny conversation with people who support the VHEM. It is like having a conversation with a wall. A very delusional wall.

  • @1StoryImageFigure1 So far the only person I've encountered who makes a fair amount of sense in this whole debate is Skallagrim. For most supporters, it seems to me that they read a lot of Thomas Malthus and nothing of his critics.

  • I enjoyed this video. relatively optimistic, I think. I like SallagrimNilsson. I think he's a good guy.

  • @RichardRoy2

Likewise. He makes me think, and he's a pleasant guy.

I've long defined myself as a cynical optimist :P

  • I have been chillig on Libcom.org and somebody posted a video supporting the idiots of VHEM as a joke. I needed to see your video again to removed the idocy from my mind.

I am proud to be human. Keep up the good work.

  • For me, it has nothing to do with saving the earth. I could care less about our planet. I just see absolutely no value to human life. Honestly not a day goes by that I don't try to work up the courage to buy a gun and blow my brains out. I'm nothing but apathetic towards others, I really could care less about others, I just don't really see any sort of point or value to human life.

  • It seems to me that you misunderstand the core arguments of the VHEM due to your strongly anthropocentric viewpoint. Put simply, as long as humans are around, they will continue to mercilessly exploit their surroundings. Nanotechnology and colonization may provide short term fixes for humankind's mistakes, but ultimately only provide us with new ways to consume resources. Human survival is easy (we are quite a resilient parasite), it's not about that. It's about preservation of the biosphere.

  • @Kbiomech VHEM supporters are eco-nuts who, like all ecologiest, view humanity as something bad excluding themselves of course. As for Malthus, allot of people have been duped by him. It is unsurprising that the VHEM people read only him and nothing else. Reading books that show Malthus as wrong and back it up will blow a hole in their world view. They can not have that.

  • I say YES!

  • 6:00 - Individualism is a comforting delusion.

  • @Hiroyukiskye And other animals are not? Other animals do everything you condemn humans for doing. Humans are animals and are not except from such things.

  • Overpopulation is the least of the problems, like you said it will and can be fixed. If there were any reasons human's should go extinct it would be because generally Human's are selfish, greedy, power hungry beings who destroy and cause immense suffering and pain to other species as well as our own for personal gain. However, with all that said I still advocate self guided evolution over extinction. But I can see why people would loose hope and feel that extinction is necessary. Good video!
