Or Pokemon that can't be caught up to that point. Though, you could get a low-level electrode from the old guy by catching a Pikachu in Viridian forest, evolving it with a stone then trading it to him. Other than that, yeah, they are mostly worthless. Not to mention the mostly uninspired nicknames.

Aside from Pokemon that can't be caught in the wild, all ingame trades are total crap.
That guy needs to be updated...
The guy working the resurrection machine here is SO much nicer than the one in Sinnoh. Eccentric though...
