SA GROUP 1 RACING KYALAMI 1985

1985 Group 1 (similar to the then European and Australian Group A series) race at Kyalami. At this event, the Ford Sierra XR8's of Serge Damseaux and John Gibb were unbeatable, but that didn't deter Tony Viana from delivering his typical inspired performance behind the wheel of the Winfield BMW 745i, the only other Class T car. The Alfa Romeo Class U challenge, headed by Nico Bianco in the SA-only Alfa GTV 3 litre, didn't shape at all for this race, held amidst a season of high controversy off the track.

@africankat1 : I have lots more SA motorsport coverage of those days, but not sure whether there is any more Group 1 - I was a Formula 2/Atlantic addict then, before we lost those cars at the end of 1986! I'm (very) slowly converting most of the collection to digital and if I find any more Grp 1, you can be sure that you will find it here.

Do u mind if i ask how u got these videos? I tried awhile back with the SABC but they were clueless really :/

ps. the XR8's in this race were later found to have had illegal cylinder head mods - then started the collapse of Group 1 :(

@africankat1 : I never knew that the Ford team were also mucking around with the regs - I remember the big drama when the Alfa's were called to scrutineering after one of the Kyalami races and always thought that this was the ultimate death knell for Group 1.

Hi all. Does anyone have any footage of the epic Group 1 races with Abel D'Oliviera and Nico Bianco in the Alfa GTV6s taking the challenge to the Gunston BMWs and the Sierras of Serge Damsieux and John Gibb?

I've also been looking for any TV footage of the 1984 24 hours race at Daytona where Sarel van der Mewe, Tony Martin and Graham Duxbury won the race in a March-Porsche 83G.

@photovideo270 Yeah i recall the Alfa drama :), when the XR8's were found to be illegal Ford pulled out and that was that really. IMO i think alot of teams/manufacturers from that era might have bent the rules a little such was the desperation to win.
