@Nragemachine I had a crack at Donnie Darko, but couldn't find much in it. Maybe I just didn't get it, but it struck me as one of those films that are like an extended music vidoe with various cryptic details designed to draw attention rather than communicate something specific. I guess I'm not the guy to review DK, but I do like it.

To add to this, supposedly an interviewer once asked Stephen Spielberg (though I haven't seen the interview myself) if it was true that Close Encounters of the Third Kind was an allegorical tale about loss of innocence in childhood. Spielberg thought for a second, then said he'd never realized it before, but yes.
I think what these analyses, and any deep study of good art will show, is that the most powerful expression happens on the subconscious level.

Just about all action movies from the 70s/80s, and a great many of the horror movies too (The Thing comes to mind), are Vietnam parables or involve characters traumatized by similar intentionally situations.

@ma049 your right alien 3 was empty and for me this is when the saga lost its way. The reasons the first 2 movies were so successful was not particularly the creature itself but the emotional journey ripley went through and how she grew the strength to fight an enemy which was as much within as without!

@feyd8194 It might be Vincent Ward that needs that slap. The founder of the timber satellite, the wooden planet, that didn't like Newt and wanted to kill her off. He was also so into medieval imagery since he was making Navigator and other films on the topic so he took his dream-like timetravelling medieval monks into the Alien universe but instead of monks lost in time, they got lost in space. In the end Hill and Giler put together every faulty script into a real mess that is Alien 3.

@robag88 To do Donnie Darko you might have to look into Richard Kelly's Southland Tales and The Box. His use of water, timetravel is reused, also themes of identity, religion and end of the world. Ever consider Cameron's influences of Kubrick? His references to 2001 and The Shining, the marines pulsating navigator while they're followed by steadicam shots while Jack is entering the room with heartbeats in a similar sequence. Also look at the Abyss poster, the rift between man and woman.

actually the 3rd and fourth movies do not exist if you think of them as occuring in Ripleys head when shes in stasis. so anyone wanting to right fanfics with hicks and newt surviving and growing older and trying to hunt down and kill escaped xenomorph.
Real shame that they followed up the triumphant survival of Newt, Ripley, Hicks and Bishop by killing most of them in the opening credits of Alien 3.
That film was about nothing, did nothing and added nothing.

@ma049 It had some nice cinematography and that's about about as positive as I can get on Alien 3

@ma049 James Cameron stated that he was very disappointed by this.

Do you think this film has feminist (for want of a better word) overtones Rob? the transformation of Riply in the first from a frightened victim to a Warrior, leader and maternal figure always struck as empowering of women. I'd also comment on the female protagonists being universally resoarceful and effective. Even the pilot is shown as competant in her brief time on screen.

@angrydead I've always had my doubts personally on the feminist themes. Any film that has proper female characters gets considered feminist - eg, Silence Of The Lambs. In the first Alien film the sexual threat and birth trauma themes pretty much demanded a female lead and it had the female retreat into hypersleep at the end - not exactly empowering. The second film only had that one character to continue with. On the other hand Scott made Thelma and Louise years later.
