I stayed there in January 1976 on my way to start over again in southern California. There was a storm and the roads were in bad shape, so I stopped there on a whim (back then there was no such thing as 'historic Rte 66': it was still an operating road in some places, especially in the Southwest. I think it cost $10 then. I've stayed there once since, in 2004. Tried to stay in October, 2010, but it was closed for the season. I took pictures of the place in 1976, mostly because of the snow.

@willyboi708 I hear the Blue Swallow is up for sale again. Would you be able to buy it now?

Its one of the Great American Road Trip Icons and a classic. Stayed there once myself. You did great in capturing the flavor of things.

When I was by there, recently, the neon wasn't lit. It was awfully late, and I didn't want to knock, and ask them to turn on their sign. The friend, whom I was with, wasn't keen on staying in older motels, so we stayed at some new place, closer to the Interstate.

Looked at this motel to purchase it in 2005. Unfortunately, we didn't do it. If hindsight were 20/20, we would be the proud owners of the Blue Swallow. I love Tucumcari!!!

We were there this summer, too and also missed the neon. But rave reviews of the service and the comfort. Hey - that' the room, we had, too! We'll definitely stay again.
I love this video...thank you for posting it...If God willing...I plan to stay at that hotel this June 2008 when I go out there for vacation...it is something I have wanted to do most of my life and here I am almost 50.
