Bell in a Bell Jar

A bell can be heard ringing within a bell jar. The bell jar is connected to a vacuum pump and the air is slowly removed. Once a vacuum has been achieved the pumped is turned off and air is allowed to slowly re-enter the bell jar.

Well spotted. The vacuum created is not total - probably around 95% using that particular pump - hence some of the sound can still get through.

Complete vacuum may cause the jar to collapse. Also, It's not that easy to have a complete vacuum. More over, you can hear it because the base that bell is sitting on allow the sound waves to pass through it.

this should not be possible, if you got a complete vaccum then you wouldnt be able to hear it because the sound would be lacking a medium

@QuantumBoffin also the bell is still in physical contact with some parts of the container, however well sound insulated, so the vibration may travel out via different mediums

You should have isolated the bell mechanicly also!

Then you really can not hear a thing (almost).
