An official switchblade uses no force from the user (spring loaded, etc). "Assisted" or lever-assisted blades require some force from the user to open. It's a silly distinction, but it's the difference between legal and illegal in many states.
Interesting side note: It's only legal to possess a switchblade in California if it's less than 2 inches long or YOU ARE A ONE ARMED MAN. I s&*t you not. State law.
