Militants shot their way through a security post at the gate of the Pearl Continental Hotel in the northwestern city of Peshawar, Pakistan.
Security officials say a suspected suicide bomber set off a truck bomb in front of the hotel lobby.
Top city administrator, Sahibzada Anis, says five people have been killed.
One of the victims was a U.N. refugee agency worker who police say was a Serbian.
About 70 people were wounded, among them a German woman working for the U.N. children's fund.
The United Nations is heavily involved in providing relief for more than two-and-a-half million people displaced by the fighting in the Swat Valley region, and elsewhere in the northwest.
The hotel's windows were shattered and dozens of cars were destroyed.
Police say the truck contained 500 kilograms of explosives, similar to that carried by a suicide truck bomb at the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad in September 2008, that killed 55 people.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Taliban have warned of attacks in response to the offensive in Swat.
The United States, which needs sustained Pakistani action to help defeat al Qaeda and cut off militant support for the Afghan Taliban, has been heartened by the resolve the government and military are showing in the Swat offensive.

@ all brainfed ........why blaiming TALIBAN, ever thought who they are? i bet none of these brainfed around here can ever point out to somebody as TALIBAN.
where were they before 9/11? where were they? they were and are our frontline defenders in west. never forget 1970s - 1995s. they were our beloved brothers. we helped them to secure ourselves.
I really feel sad when we call taliban as terrorist. when they were terrorised in 2001 why couldnot thay do the same in return to usa or pak?

What about saudis? I think they are also behind this carnage directly or indirectly. These wahabi militants/mercenaries are funded by sheikhs from saudi arabia.
