A tutorial on the intro portion of this fantastic song. I left my speakers on accidentally so there is a funny reverb but the main parts are ok. I will do PartII shortly with an explanation of the enunciation and polyrhythms. Sufjan is a phenomenal songwriter, his rhythmic details are amazing.

  • thanks! I haven't heard any gravenhurst, any recommendations or songs you're looking to figure out in particular? I can give it/them a shot when things at work settle down a bit. just message me. Take care and thanks for checking out the clip!

  • great cover, but i can't ever make out the chords you are posting in most of your covers, would you be able to just post some quick chords?

  • sure thing, i've been trying to get together a few pdf's of the chords i use but i've been a bit busy lately. any song in particular you'd like to figure out? Just message me and I can shoot you a quick email with a breakdown of a particular piece. thanks for checking the clip out, take care!

  • The reason the chords are hard to pick is because he's finger-picking. So the base chords are D, Bm, G, Em, but the fingering looks more like:

    Dsus2 (xx023x)

    An Open Bm chord (x2403x)

    G5 (3x003x)

    Em7 (0xx03x)

  • You are the most mellow man in the world. Now I can play this. I thank you.

  • I think you might actually have a softer voice then Sufjan which is saying something

  • i don't think there are any polyrhythms in this song as it seems to be in 6/8. the bass notes are just 8th notes on the low melody. good tutorial

  • You sang this well, and I like your acoustic version even better than all the accompaniment on the album. Thanks for jump-starting my curiosity (and awe) in polyrhythms. A piece of the rhythmic puzzle clicks into place. I'm seeing them in his other songs now. Like Chicago, I think is 3 vs 4.

  • this sounds soooooooooo much better tuned down a half step rather then up a full step...its like night and day.

  • Could you send one my way as well?

  • Love your voice!...I could actually fall asleep just listening to you(in a good way).

Great job on the lesson =]

  • This is excellent. Thanks!

  • Haha.

  • i love your bowl cut and i love this can i grab the pdf also? cheers
