Johnny Ive must have conceived it while sitting in the toilet... desperate for an answer, he gave the toilet bowl cover design to steve jobs.

What you say is true for many people. I still use CDs but not ethernet. To make a smaller laptop you have to remove features. The Macbook Air is smaller than an old laptop but it still can't fit in my pocket so I'd rather use a smartphone for most computing tasks away from home. On the rare occasions when I have to use my chunky old laptop, it's small enough to be carried around so there's no difference to me. You're right when you say it's because of marketing.

true, but not many people use ethernet or CDs anymore, they got rid of it because they took up space. Because of marketing, they want to make their laptops as small as possible.

Apple should watch this. Now days most of their laptops don't have dedicated graphics. Back then Apple understood the importance of CD drives in computers. Expandable memory in a Mac laptop? Now days if you want more memory for your Macbook you buy a new Macbook. Nowdays they cut out ethernet and the handle.
Apple loves to say they have unique features that are already in the competition. CD-Rom pops out, no cover on ethernet, the same as the Toshiba laptop I had in the 90s (which was 366 MHz).
