even so, if the advance fleet were to occupy Earth they would be open to counter attack from the Saturn group. And if they were not successful in occupying Earth they would be caught in a pincer, fighting both the forces defending Earth itself and a counter attacking Saturn fleet. Much better to just destroy as much of the Earth fleet as possible as quickly as possible.

Effective counter-tactics for the advance fleet: Plunge into the inner solar system from one of its poles and avoid Saturn altogether. Until they get going, Earth is already occupied... Space is not a place where you need to fight your way through enemy lines - just warp them by!

The defenders are not much without the supply from Earth, that Balsey should know. As for their wave-motion guns, "The New Voyage" has demonstrated the most effective counter-tactics: Keep your enemy's planet behind you! ;-)

I would have to agree. Combat in space is a real challenge for a defender of a fixed location. On the other hand it might be risky to assault the earth and be attacked from the rear by the defenders. A superior force might find it better to eleminate that threat and then take on the Earth at it's leisure.
