We could just about save and re-run this report if/when it happens again! Looting, prison riots, people stuck in darkness, calling in the military, nuclear issues, only it'd be 10 times worse!

I had an uncle who died that same day.

I was there we got stuck in the trains I was a young girl. We got out of the train because we were close to the station and we walk to the station and then down to 42 st to take bus.

I was only 8 and in third grade when this happened. I don't remember this happening in Philly.

@byrd4216 I suspect that David Brinkley anchored his part from Washington.
If NBC had enough juice in New York, Chet Huntley may have been able to host his part of the news by candlelight and flashlights, given that in this clip (a few hours later), Frank McGee did a report via candlelight and emergency power.

@thepod96 It was called "party lines" and no, not in the same building. Other people shared the phone lines in those days.

I remember that day/night. The moon was bright that night to help light the streets.
This happened on Tuesday, November 9, 1965- this "Special Report", I believe, aired at 7:30pm(et), pre-empting "MY MOTHER, THE CAR". NBC's New York affiliate was off the air, of course, due to the blackout {which is why Bob Abernethy was anchoring this from Washington}; where I lived, in New Jersey, our family's set picked up NBC's Philiadelphia affiliate, KYW-TV, where I first saw this...

Bob Abernethy has been the Executive Editor & Host of PBS' Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly since 1997. Peter Hackes, who left NBC in April 1986, had a role in the movie "Broadcast News." He died at age 69 in April 1994.
Also happening earlier that same day in New York City was Roger Allen LaPorte protesting the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War by setting himself on fire in front of the United Nations headquarters. He died the following day.
