This one has steadier camerawork than my other one. (It involves me using a tripod instead of my dad filming from a moving ferry without a tripod.) There was not a funnel vortex though, even though I thought that there might be this time as it was just after a storm passed by causing the tide to be stronger.

Please if anyone see's the Old Sow at a time when it happens to form a funnel, film it and load the video to youtube.

  • the best time to see the ol sow is when the tides are full. the show is best at about 2 hours into the rising tide. just in case you happen to be there again.

  • @clinehar

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind next time I get to go see it. Anyway, if you have any good footage or even just photos of it could you post them?

  • I've read that Old Sow can sometimes form a funnel ten to twenty feet deep but unfortunately is very fickle. Does anyone have a picture or video of the whirlpool when it formed a major funnel? I haven't seen one yet.

  • @toonpatrol59

I have not been able to find one either. That's part of the reason that I posted this. I was hoping to get somebody who lives near Old Sow to film it when it is a funnel and post it online. (Ditto Moskenstraumen, but I've never been to Norway.)

  • your video is only marginally better than the other one. someone needs to get on this.

  • @viterbocycling

    Another couple of problems are:

    1. It's an old video camera (from 1994)

    2. I was not fortunate enough to see Old Sow during one of the occasions that it formed a funnel

  • the guy that runs the ferry told us his dad seen it forty feet feet deep back in the sixtys, and if it wouldve been wide enough it wouldve tken the ferry down, isnt this suppeosed to be the biggest whirlpool in the world?

  • Hurricane Earl will go right over Old Sow's neighborhood late on Friday and early Saturday, Sept. 4. This might be enough to cause a real funnel to form, though I don't think anyone will be around to take a picture!

  • Hurricane Earl is expected to pass very close to where Old Sow is. Perhaps this will be enough to get a major funnel to form- too bad its too dangerous a situation to film!

  • Thanks RedStore. I was out there last fall, hit town the day Hurrican Kyle went over, and had a great stay for a week. My g/f and I went on a whale hunting..er...watching trip pn the Sylvia Beal (shameless free plug). Thanks for the memory reminder
