As I mentioned in a comment on his Intro to "Moving On", what he says here is so profound and true. Even his book "Moving On" had me in a combination of tears and fascination as the experiences the person he describes in the opening of the book could well have been me. (She wasn't, but her experiences in life were similar and the reasons for loving his work so much are the same as mine.) As a fan of Steve Hanks as well as an artist, I truly appreciate his sharing his experiences so openly.
