The Epimenides Cretan Chapter of San Francisco California is hosting a Cretan Glendi at the Annunciation Cathedral in San Francisco featuring arguably the most skilled lyra technician in Crete today, Giorgios Maggelakis of Sfakia. He is accompanied by Demetrios, playing Kithara, and Demetrios playing Laouto. This shot was taken at the home of Christos and Olga Papadakis of Burlingame, California.
Giorgios is playing on a very rare lyra made by the famous Antonis Verikakis of Chania, who has only made about 5 lyres total so far. His specialty is Laoutos and has a regular backlog of customers waiting for his fine handiwork. Giorgos says that thw lyra is of extraordinary quality, and that he loves the sound that it makes.
I had the pleasure of meeting Giorgios Maggelakis at Antonis Verikakis Laouto shop in Crete in 2010 and was very pleased to hear that our chapter would be bringing him to play at our Glendi. The Glendi will be on Saturday night, January 22, 2011, and it is a "sold-out"crowd of over 430 people.
