I started voluteering at a hospital near me. I went to E/R one day and yesterday, I did 4 hrs on a meg/surg floor. There's a lot I cannot do because I am a volunteer, but I am a certified CNA. I wanted a CNA job, but this hospital has started a pod system with LPN and RNs working as a team on the patients eliminating the CNAs. There are other hospitals in the area that hire CNAs, but they want experienced CNAs. Volunteering is a good option, but a job gives you experience & pay.

I was a CNA for 10 years in the hospital and in nursing homes before i became a LPN it really helped me alot as for what you mentioned. in school now for RN.

GREAT advice! I earned my CNA license prior to Nursing school & it definitely provided both knowledge and confidence - esp. going into the 1st semester! The one caution I would offer is to not get turned off to Nursing because of CNA experiences. As a CNA I had 15-20 patients during 12-hour day shifts on a hospital floor with our nurses having 5+ each. The CNA's never sit down or have the opp. to really support our Nurses as we would like. Experience is great but exhausting, low paid work!

@txgirle -Exactly!! Being a CNA can be tough as you mentioned, but definitely great experience. 15-20 patients sounds crazy though. It depends on the hospital. At my last job, CNAs had like 6 patients.

Yeah I agree. Just go ahead and become a nurses aide. At my school its only like 2 pre requisites and I class in the program.
You dont get paid to volunteer!!! lol
