Fusion Splicing http://www.olcfiber.com is achieved by using an electric arc to fuse or melt two optical fibers together at their end faces. This process is called fusion splicing.

I took the video output port of one of our Fujikura fusion splicers and capture the instance of fusion.

I slowed the capture speed down so that the entire process can been seen. You can clearly see the core and the cladding as the splicer calculates core/clad axis split nano seconds before the arc fires. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8TntqS3chY
