I met Cohen in Old Montreal, in a bar, I think in about 1983-85, had a beer, it was daylight. Didn't talk about music, just about the street and Montreal. I think he;s the master because he wrote the song, all other interpretations gladly received and honoured. The song is the the song, just happens to be written by a Canadian Icon... cheers to all

It is Cohen, period. Buy his Poem Books if you don't believe. They are dated far back compared those cover artists - most of whom don't even claim to be original, so where is the fight?

People, people, people, what is all the dissension about? Leonard Cohen wrote this song - the fact that others have recorded it means that he has allowed them to do so. It is not something to hear the song sung by the man who wrote it? Yes, I attend the Metropolitan Opera but I also appreciate less formal singing. Can we not have many artists and interpretations of a song? When did You Tube become for forum for anyone who wants to kvetch about an song or an artist?

Twice I have been to a concert where the master sings this song.. And I tell yu there is nothing like several thousand people singing along to the chorus...it is a thing i will NEVER forget. I am blessed to have seen such genuis, to have experienced such bliss
