Great concept, Phil! I am a user experience design and very interested in the "UX of health"... I think you are really onto something. Only thing that I worry about... Is the plate a bit patronizing? I wonder how successful it has been for people. What kind of feedback have you gotten? I would love to talk to you about this and check out your cards. I have been making and updating my own deck of cards that I have been using for YEARS! Great job - and it is obviously working for you!

Hi, Sophia. Thanks for writing. Feedback has been phenomenal. Not sure what you mean by the plate being patronizing?

We don't specifically address caloric requirements with FitPlate. This is intentional. We've found that when you start to throw numbers and calorie counting at people -- motivation, compliance, and fun go out the window. We premise the product on the fact that most humans don't need more than what will fit on the plate. Clearly, there are situations that don't fit this concept in a literal sense. I need more than than what fits exactly on the FitPlate when I'm trying to add a few lbs.

Buy pears packed in extra, extra light syrup. There's not much sugar in those compared to the normal canned stuff.

I dont know if I would feel too much like a child with a harness - maybe patronizing is the wrong word- infantilizing? But, I suppose so many of us have such messed up eating habits that we need this harness. I think it is a fine line, a paradoxical conundrum - how to guide people to better habits while liberating them at the same time? Too much structure can backfire! I think that "gamifying" health is the way to go, and you are definitely succeeding at that. :)
